Why go to Africa when you can have your very own wildlife safari in Borneo. Come trek with us through the pristine Jungle of the lower Kinabatangan River in search of colourful tropical birds, crocodiles, huge monitor lizards, wild pigs, elephants, otters, several species of monkeys, tree snakes. It is also a haven for the Proboscis Monkey, Orang Utan, hornbills and kingfishers.

We pay tribute to our soldiers. The Sandakan-Ranau POW Death March is acknowledged as the worst tragedy for Australia in World War II. Tragic though it is, the story of the Death March is an important chapter in the shared wartime history of Australia and Sabah/ Borneo. We offer treks exploring sections of the Sandakan Death March Route by vehicle and on foot. We visit the haunting 8 mile Prisoner of war camp at Sandakan; explore the Sandakan town including the Catholic Church where the prisoners first stayed on arrival in the area. We also take time out to visit the Sepilok Orang Utan sanctuary.

All of our adventures can be designed to suit the elite athlete with harder and more challenging adventures or modified to suit school groups, groups or individuals. Our trekking groups are small and personal, with most group sizes only around 8 people allowing for greater flexibility in the itinerary. We can also cater for 1 or 25 travellers.

Day 1 Arrive KK

Arrive Kota Kinabalu

You will be met at the airport by a Wild Spirit representative and transferred to your hotel

Day 2 KK Free Leisure

Optional: Sightseeing tour of Kota Kinabalu, visit one of the nearby islands or just relax and enjoy the culture of the local people.

Day 3 Bike & Kayak (B/L)

Pick up at 0730hrs to transfer by vehicle to the top of Kampung Kokol where you commence a cycle on a narrow track though the jungle. This area will require some determination as you will need to push your bikes in parts . You will be rewarded with magnificent scenery of mountains, forest and local plantations. After admiring the view we ride down a long steep descent to Kiulu village. Riders will pass the countryside road to the ending point for lunch. After lunch, transfer to the start point at Kg. Pukak for kayaking. Kiulu river is a great experience for everyone. The clear and cool water will cool you down as you ride the lively rapids for excitement. Try the body rafting, take a swim and participating in paddling. After rafting transfer back to Rose Cabin for overnight.

Day 4 Mt. Kinabalu Climb (B/PL/D)

Depart to Kinabalu Park and register at the Park HQ office, and proceed to the Timpohon Gate where you will start the climb to Laban Rata, on the upper slopes of Mount Kinabalu. A Mountain guide will accompany the group. Tonight’s accommodation will be in mountain hut.

Day 5 Decent / Poring / Sabah Tea (B/L)

You start the ascent to the summit by torchlight at 0200hrs to the highest peak in South East Asia (4094.5m). After absorbing the amazing views, we will begin the long decent back to the Timpohon Gate. You will then be transfer to the Hot Spring at Poring where you can soak those tired muscles. Overnight Sabah Tea Long House.

Day 6 POW Sandakan (B)

Start the day with an early breakfast before we drive you to Sandakan (4.5hrs).Here you will visit the POW Australian Memorial, honoring the survivors and local civilians who helped by clandestinely feeding the prisoners and soldiers at Sandakan during the death marches into the jungle. After lunch we proceed to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Orphaned and injured Orangutans are brought to Sepilok to be rehabilitated to return to forest life. Sepilok is a primary lowland forest, a fine showcase of Borneo’s remaining rainforest. Witness the feeding of Orangutan from a platform in the forest. After the Orangutan, check in to Sepilok Lodge Dinner and overnight stay at Sepilok Lodge.

Day 7 Sukau (B/L/D)

From here, take another 2½ hours drive to Sukau. After checking in to the Kinabatangan Lodge you can relax before we take a late afternoon river cruise along the Menanggol river, a small tributary of the Kinabatangan River. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 8 Sukau (B/L/D)

Wake up to the calls of gibbons and hornbills. Early morning you take a river trip to the Ox Bow Lake to observe wildlife and experience the early morning river ambience of the longest river of Sabah. Return to lodge for breakfast, then relax and have some time at your own leisure. After lunch, late in the afternoon, take a boat to cruise the river in search for Proboscis Monkey, different species of birds and other wildlife. Return lodge for dinner. Overnight at Kinabatangan Lodge.

Day 9 Lahad Datu / Danum Valley Field Centre (B/L/D)

Depart for Lahad Datu (4hrs driv) and arrive for lunch. Transfer to DVFC (Danum Valley Field Centre) ( 2½ hours) overland journey. DVFC is a world renowned scientific facility located in the Yayasan Sabah Forest Management Area, on the edge of the 438sqkm Danum Valley Conservation Area, the largest remaining area of undisturbed lowland dipterocarp forest in Sabah. Danum Valley is the biggest sanctuary for the primate Orangutan and home to more than 275 species of birds including all 8 species of the Borneo Hornbills. After dinner at DVFC, join the night drive not to be missed! This is the best way to see some of the valley’s mammals. Successful wildlife-viewing depends on many factors, but on good night, this is as close as you will get to an African safari in Southeast Asia. Overnight camp at DVFC in tents.

Day 10 DVFC (Danum Valley Field Centre) (B/L/D)

After breakfast we start a whole day of jungle trekking to Purut Waterfall or Tambiling Waterfall and Sabah’s largest protected area of lowland dipterocarp forest. Growing in this Borneo Eden is the world’s largest variety of plant life. The dipterocarp forest has over 200 species of trees per hectare, some of which are the oldest and tallest (and most diverse). Trek back to DVFC. After dinner, another opportunity to experience the night walk or drive walk. Dinner and overnight camp at DVFC.

Day 11 BRL (Borneo Rainforest Lodge) (B/L/D)

Early morning rise and drive for 30 minutes to see the sunrise from the platform. Return back to DVFC for breakfast. Proceed to BRL (Borneo Rainforest Lodge) some 36km, located in a magnificent jungle setting beside the Danum River. It is in the midst of the Danum Valley Conservation Area and is Sabah’s largest protected Area of lowland dipterocarp forest. The animal wildlife is equally wondrous. Contained in the pristine jungle are some of Malaysia’s most exciting animals – the rare Sumatran Rhino, monkeys, Orangutans, Asia Elephants, reptiles and species of birds. You will reach a point where we start to trek to where you will then have the opportunity to take a swim in the river. Later, indulge in jungle walking to the ‘canopy walkway’. Trek to the Kadazandusun burial site known as the ‘Coffin Cliff’ and on to the ‘View Point’ for a bird’s eye view of the area. Descend to the “Jacuzzi Pool’ for a refreshing dip.

Dinner is served at approx 1900 before a. briefing and slide presentation at the conference Room at 2030. By 2100hrs join another night drive not to be missed in an open-air jeep in search of nocturnal animals (if weather permits). Overnight at Danum Valley Borneo Rainforest Lodge.

Day 12 BRL / Lahad Datu / Kota Kinabalu (B)

Start the day with an early morning jungle walk before breakfast. Transfer from Borneo Rainforest Lodge to Lahad Datu (1½ hours drive) and fly back to Kota Kinabalu city.

Overnight Kota Kinabalu.
