10 Nights Kokoda Trail Trek Itinerary


Includes trekking, bike riding, boat ride, climbing Mt Kinabalu, river rafting

Day 1
Arrive Sandakan – (24 March 2018)

Pickup from the airport and transfer to Four Points Hotel by Sheraton, Sandakan.
In the afternoon visit Sandakan POW camp/Memorial.
We then visit the World Famous Sepilok Orang-Utan Centre.

Day 2
Sandakan to Beluran – (4 hours by boat) – (25 March 2018)

After breakfast we start our amazing Coast-to-Coast Challengewith a 4-hour boat ride from Sandakan up the Sapi River to Beluran.
This afternoon we check our bikes and prepare for our next day bike ride.

Day 3
Beluran to Telupid Mountain Bikes – (26 March 2018)

(B/L/D) Distance 102kms

Today we depart Beluran and commence our big day on the bike

Beluran was a significant Japanese Camp site and POW area during the death march.
Our ride today will take us past the area that some of the Death March Survivors escaped.
Our journey will take us through many villages, plantations and is a great day in the saddle. We will arrive late in the afternoon and settle into our lodges at Telupid.

Day 4
Telupid across Bauto back to Telupid – (27 March 2018)

(BLD) Distance 16km

Today we trek Bauto Hill. This was the area that Sandakan Death March survivor Keith Botterill witnessed atrocities to Australian POW’s.
We walk up through a riverbefore commencing Our 450m climb up through the dense jungle of Gambaron Hill.
We continue our journey along the track and break out of the jungle on our descent downtowards Telupid.
We return to our Hotel for a well-earned refreshing shower.

Day 5
Sandakan Death – (28 March 2018)

(B/L/D) Distance 13kms, walking time 7.5 hours

From Taviu we walk onto Mungkadai Village and Miru Village. The route across to Miru is scenic as we walk through quaint Villages. The local kids and villagers are very excited tomeet us and are all smiles as we walk through their villages.We enter the Village of Miruwith its towering hills and cliffs surrounding this delightful andtraditional village.

Day 6
Sandakan Death – (29 March 2018)

(B/L/D) Distance 9kms, walking time 6 hours

Our start today is up the Taviu Hill approximately 2 hours walk before driving to the villageof Nabutan before walkingthrough forests and farms, and along a beautiful river to thevillage of Nalapak.We then trek up towards the Sabah Tea Gardens and onto Quailey’s Hill. After lunch, we continue our trek to Muruk, which was also a major Japanese camp and POW camp for the POW’s along the Sandakan Death March route; we then transfer back toSabah Tea Estate for overnight stay in a traditional long house.

Day 7
Sandakan Death – (30 March 2018)

(B/L/D) Distance 12kms, walking time 5 hours

Transfer to Muruk village by bus before we commence a steep ascent up Marakau Hill, also known as Botterill’s Hill, named after Sandakan Death March survivor Keith Botterill. Botterill trekked up this hill 6 times lugging 20kg bags of rice to keep himselffit and also give him a chance to pinch some rice to help his escape.We then follow a short steep trek through jungle, before descending and crossing RanauPlain for lunch and pay our respects at the Ranau POW Camp sites 1 and 2.We then visit the magnificently restored Kundasang War Memorial to participate in a serviceto remember all those who gave their lives for Australia and those that lost their lives on theSandakan Ranau Death March. We have some time here to watch a video and reflect as wewalk through the various memorial gardens. We will then transfer back to the Le MeridianHotel for relaxation and celebration of amagnificent achievement.

Day 8
Mt Kinabalu climb/trek 4095m – (31 March 2018)

Drive to National Park Headquarters and begin the climb of Mt Kinabalu. Mt Kinabalu is a non-technical climb and a great first time trekking mountain. It is the highest mountain
in Borneo and the highest mountain between The Himalayas and New Guinea.

Day 9
Summit Day – (1 April 2018)

Climb up to the summit of Mt Kinabalu 4095m and then descend to the starting point. We will then transfer back to our accommodation.

Day 10
Kiulu River to Rasa Ria Resort – (2 April 2018)

Today we spend a couple of hours rafting down the Kiulu River.
We then use a combination of vehicles and mountain bikes before arriving triumphantly on the beach at the Rasa Ria 5 star resort for a night of celebrations.

Day 11
Wednesday – (3 April 2018)

After breakfast your tour ends. Depart for homeport.


Note: Accommodation along the Kokoda Track is camping in tents.
